Lake Cocolalla, Bonner County, Idaho

Lake Cocolalla (800 acres) is in Bonner County about 25 miles south of Sandpoint, Idaho and 35 miles North of the City of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This is a fabulous water sport lake and well known for being a great water skiing/wakeboarding lake particularly in the hot summer months when the winds are light or non existent, otherwise the lake has consistent winds that come from either the North or South for superb sailing conditions. It is a nice open lake allowing the winds to beautifully cascade across it.

As with most lakes summer is the time for the lightest winds so morning and evening sailing are best; for the rest of the year the winds are more consistent and stronger. Still from reports of people who regularly sail on this lake I am told the winds tend to be very consistent throughout the year. There is a public boat launch with paved ramp, single dock, pit toilets, and very large gravel parking lot. During late summer the depth of the launch may be only a few feet deep. The launch is free to use, and there is free camping (10 sites with no hookups) with a 3 day limit. There is a resident that monitors the park in the summer. There is one tent site next to the water and other sites are designed for camp trailers and RV's. Active railroad tracks pass the east side of the camping area so when the trains pass it sounds like its going to run you over. The north and west side of the lakes shoreline is private. On the northwest corner Cocolalla Creek enters the lake. This is a popular kayaking creek and if you portage around the snags and many beaver dams you will enter Round Lake which is within Round Lake State Park. On the southeast end of the lake Fish Creek is its outlet. Fishing: Black Crappie, Bullhead Catfish, Channel Catfish, Cutthroat Trout, Eastern Brook Trout, German Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch. See sign when fishing at this lake. For more fishing info call 208-769-1414. Longitude 116d 35m 58s -to- 116d 37m 36s west. Latitude 48d 6m 30s -to- 48d 8m 31s N.
